A small house prefers to have a close union between each of its rooms. Nevertheless it also needs to separate rooms at times in order to save space. In this way we can easily define what belongs to one place and what becomes part of another. Like the kitchen being separated from a dining room for instance. In this articles we explore ideas to help you create segments within small houses in order to allow communication and maintain certain order. We look at 13 examples in different shapes, colors and textures all having a common purpose to divide rooms without feeling cut off.

1. Do not separate a room but create dividers

In a small home space is of utmost importance. For example, here we have a stylish bedroom and a perfectly comfortable sitting room, a place of relaxation.

A good way to segment under these circumstances when space is lacking is to install light bars which do not break the whole atmosphere but highlight different points of the room.

2. Wall extension

In this living room we have a panel that camouflages well  with the environment to conserve communication but still give division of room and at the same time has a quality that makes it unique. It is a seemingly brilliant decoration and serves two purposes at once.

3. Different levels

With this slight elevation between two rooms we show that there are two different places coexisting, in this case dining room and living room. Thus there is no need to convene a panel.

4. Vibrant colors

If you display at least one to three vibrant colors to your liking in one given room, and begin to paint the corners of the walls or elements in your home that divide different rooms, for instance some pillars, furniture, staircase, then you create a wonderful space illusion that is bright and different.

5. A wall without a center

We all know that a wall prevents all communication between rooms, an unfortunate aspect in a small home, however let us look at a different idea. What about a wall that is not quite fully accomplished, a wall that has nothing at the center? Interior architects created an interesting prospect! We have  a certain barrier that creates division between rooms but is not distant and keeps communication on an open level.

6. Furniture with a backrest

The location and orientation of the furniture can be enough to generate divisions. What is also interesting is that simple element such as having a backrest denotes an imaginary barrier between spaces.

7. Divisions that come and go

A small home with permanent division becomes even more cramped. That is why it is a good idea to install elements that can be removed or folded away when you no longer need them.

8. Doors in unexpected places

Using doors right in the dividing line is a great idea if you wish to create a separate section of the room, because when closed you can have private space for work and be undisturbed, something that is necessary especially in cramped spaces.

9. Multi functional division

If you do not have another way to divide the interior of your house then why not place a piece of furniture which serves as a barrier but can also be rather functional, such as we have here. This bookcase is also used to put up decratiive objects, something that is well integrated and useful.

10. Division and light

When houses are small it is common to discover that the elements that divide one area from another become buried in shadow and darkness at times. After all barriers can block light as much as they create space.

The solution is that you create a division which has special integrated lights which makes everything a little bit more special.

11. Creating a perfect corner

If you have a room which has no corner then you can simply improvise. Just install a corner with a ready made furniture, this creates a wall that creates ultimately a new room. Here we have a white bookshelf serving exactly that purpose.

12. Make the most of what you have

Sometimes you need to observe which elements in your home are willing to serve the purpose of playing division between rooms. Here we have the staircase that tells us where the room ends and the hallway begins.

13. A wall with something extra

If you could not find a better solution than installing an actual wall then choose a slightly different idea of a wall. Create something that allows you to have a little communication. For example an intricate window right at the center of the wall. This is optically beautiful and creates additional touch of light.
