Rustic is becoming a big buzz word in the interior design world. Everyone seems to be embracing rustic charm and warmth with modern amenities when designing or redesigning their homes. So if you're asking yourself, how can I create a simple rustic home? you've come to the right place! This Ideabook was designed to give you the inspiration you need to design the perfect rustic interior.

There are a few key elements to a modern rustic space. An open floor plan is preferred, space for modern furniture is needed, and preserved and exposed natural architectural elements are a must. The rustic colour scheme is fairly simple, yet very adaptable, including large windows that help bring the outdoors in. The rustic style has an informal elegance, combining comfort and modern living in the best way possible.

So if you're ready to have this stylish, yet rugged Western atmosphere to your home, keep reading!

Wooden elements in the bathroom

The inclusion of wood is perhaps the most important feature of modern rustic home. Lovers of the this style want to bring nature inside, and wooden elements do just that. If you have an old home, it is very important to preserve the character and original architectural details of your home. This will make renovation or designing much, much easier. Not only that, but original, untouched antique wood in the home gives more of a rustic feel than purchased wood.

One of the most interesting and visually appealing places to incorporate wooden elements is in the bathroom. Looking at this image for inspiration, we see natural wooden elements all throughout the bathroom. You can use wooden elements to create shelves, cupboards, floors, and even for the tub.

Again, we can't stress the importance of wood in the rustic home. But this time, we want to talk about spicing up the style a bit. No one will argue the elegance and beauty of untreated, natural wood in the rustic home, but it's a great choice stylistically and aesthetically to switch up the styles of wood you have in your home.

If we look at this image, we see a gorgeous escritoire with a faded paint finish and a chair to match. The faded paint finish adds a different colour style and gives the room that old-timey, rugged, Western look. This faded paint finish on your furniture works well in lighter rooms with more natural light, as we can see here, but there are tons of faded paint colours to choose from, too, so you can coordinate with any interior.

Unpainted brick walls

A tried-and-true material, brick walls brings texture, character, and colour to any room in the house. Not only that, brick walls are a staple in the rustic interior design community. If you have brick or stone walls in your home already, don't be afraid to show them off! If you need to add this element to your home, be sure to expose the support beams. The modern rustic never forgets the fifth wall – the ceiling. A-frame homes with cathedral wood ceilings are very favored, or you could add big beams to adorn the rustic space. Using reclaimed wood or include a stone fireplace is also a great way to achieve the optimal rustic look. Looking at this bedroom, we see the natural wood with its calming deep brown colour, which relaxes and allows us to feel more connected with nature

Colourful Mediterranean tiles

Rustic homes aren't always all about the natural elements. Actually, what makes this style so unique and versatile is the fact that you can incorporate other design elements right in to the rustic style and get the same rustic home, but in doing so, you also add individuality to your space. One fusion that looks amazing is the integration of Mediterranean elements to the home, and nothing is more Mediterranean that those gorgeous tiles.

Looking at this image, we see the classic colourful Mediterranean tile used as a backsplash in the kitchen. With all of the wooden and stone elements already in the kitchen, the tiles offset the natural vibe and bring more modernity and colour to the space.

Wooden log furniture

Finding wooden elements for your rustic home is one of the easiest endeavors in interior design. Wood can be formed in just about any fashion – creating chairs, tables, shelves, and countless other items – but have you ever thought about leaving your wooden elements in their most natural state? Have you ever thought about simply incorporating wooden log furniture to your home? Well if you haven't started yet, you should now!

Wooden log furniture is the quintessential component in rustic interior design. If you don't have wooden log furniture at least somewhere in your home, you're not utilizing this interior design scheme properly. The main aim of rustic design is to bring the outside in, and nothing says natural more than wooden log furniture. As we can see from this image, it doesn't have to be anything enormous. A wooden log bed frame is enough to bring that rustic charm to your room.

Wooden stairs

As a final point, we want to stress the importance of wood again. This time, we're talking about using wooden elements in the staircase.

There are literally thousands of different ways to incorporate wood into your staircase and still achieve the rustic look. As we can see from this image, simple, natural wooden stairs with a white banister perfectly complement the white interior and give the home a more natural feel. But you can also decide to go more wild with it. Staircases made of chunks of wooden logs are also fantastic stylistically.
