Light is a fundamental element of our lives. Since the dawn of time humans have assigned sacred meaning to the rise and fall of the sun each day, and they’ve passed down stories for generations about the stars. Without light there wouldn’t even be life in the first place! There is something primal about our fixation on lighting in modern times. Most of us enjoy the sunshine and value the natural lighting we can access inside our homes. When natural lighting is not sufficient, humans have even made their own.

Today, lighting has an enormous impact on the ambiance of a room. Bright, cheerful lighting is great for our productivity while dim, sultry lighting is ideal for a romantic date. A single room can be transformed by adjusting the dimmer switch or lighting a few candles. Yet, sometimes finding the best lighting can be difficult. Perhaps there are no windows in a given room, or the lighting is far too harsh for the space. For situations like these and many more, we’ve come up with 6 creative lighting solutions for you. Happy decorating!

Table lamps

Table lamps are some of the most traditional forms of lighting. They can bring a lot of style to a space. Placing a retro table lamp in an otherwise neutral or contemporary interior for instantly add flair and make a statement. An antique lamp can also tell a story. Take this vintage style lamp with a fuchsia base. It adds a pop of colour and could stand as a distinct point of interest in a more minimal room or as part of a coordinated vintage-eclectic ambiance like it does here. The table lamp is best used when trying to make a statement with the light fixture. They’re great for living rooms and home offices where reading and writing might take place. Plus these rooms tend to have some extra space available for the table lamp to stand. So if you’re looking to add some style and you have the space, go with a table lamp!

Pendulum lights

Pendulum lights are very in right now and there are lots of styles to choose from. They are best for places where you don’t have tons of extra space and a table lamp might get in the way but you want to add some aesthetic style to the room. For instance, a table lamp might not serve you best on a dining room table but pendulum lights would be out of the way and still able to serve the function of complementing the room’s existing look. You could go with industrial pendulum lights with black cords and bare bulbs or colourful glass pendulum lights to add a vintage, delicate look. They basically serve the same function as a chandelier but are much more understated than their more grandiose cousin. This room by Ekaterina Donde Design depicts the functions of the pendulum light. They tie in the existing colours in the space, helping to create harmony within the colour palette. They also bring focus to the dining area making it distinct from the rest of the kitchen.

Recessed lights

Recessed lights give a room a beautiful muted glow. Because they are in-built the light they exude is not as harsh. These are great if you’re looking to bring in softer, subtler light. If you have a room with little space for a table lamp and it’s a space where pendulum lights would get in the way, consider going with recessed lights. They are quite contemporary in appearance. Recessed lights make surrounding walls look positively glowing. This living room is rather minimal in style and the addition of more conspicuous lighting might clash with the existing interior design scheme. That’s why the recessed lights work well here. They’re certainly out of the way, but grouping several together illuminates the living area with ease. Even though they are understated in appearance, recessed lights surely do bring an opulent quality to most interiors.

Track lights

Track lights are simple, no-nonsense fixtures that are increasingly common in modern and contemporary aesthetics. They give off a sleek and unapologetic air that makes them cool. Track lights are ideal for focusing light in specific ways. Traditionally they were often used in art galleries to bring emphasis to the work on display. Track lights can also be used in tandem with one another like we see in this interior. The result is a modern, Scandinavian look that is striking enough to draw the eye without taking the focus from other design elements in the room. You can also try mounting track lights on walls instead of ceilings. Track lights come in a multitude of styles and configurations so don’t be deterred if the more traditional straight black track lights aren’t for you.

Sumptuous chandelier

Chandeliers are one of the most iconic forms of lighting in terms of opulence. They are present in palaces and other grand estates throughout history. They are extravagant and crystalline, often subject to lots of ooh’s and ah’s. There is just something so charming about the twinkle of luxury they bring to a space. Traditionally one might find a chandelier in a dining room, ballroom, or entryway where they’d be most likely to make a statement among guests. Although a chandelier will always do in these more conventional places, there is no need to limit yourself to them only. We love the idea of incorporating a chandelier in this bathroom! What a great way to make the place where you pamper yourself feel more lavish. A chandelier in the bathroom is especially in line with country style design, but it can work in almost any aesthetic persuasion.

String lights in the garden

It is possible to make outdoor spaces quite magical with the help of some thoughtful lighting arrangements. Lanterns will make the garden look cosy. An outdoor fire pit makes for a good gathering place on a cool summer evening. Solar lights lining the path of your garden will make the garden look composed and well appointed. Moreover, some tiki torches bring a festive tropical look to the space. One of our most favourite means of illuminating the garden, however, is with string lights. This garden space is positively glowing because of these light fixtures! You could also incorporate them into a trellis to incorporate string lights overhead. Alternatively, you could even use them indoors. They are a beautiful addition to a child’s bedroom, for instance.
