According to a study, energy consumption in our homes has grown tremendously over the years and demand is continuously growing with each passing day. TV, fan, AC, cooler, refrigerator, kitchen appliances, lighting, water heater… or even the standby appliances which are just plugged in and not turned on consumes substantial energy for its running thus leaving carbon footprints behind and contributing generously to global warming and environmental issues.

Since the demand and consumption of electricity is only growing up, the pressure on our environment is also steadily growing with it. Today it’s the demand of time and our moral responsibility that we rise to the occasion and contribute our share, no matter how meager it is to save our planet. Opting for renewable resources is not possible for everyone. But lowering the consumption is possible for almost everyone. This small step of energy conservation and an effort to make a small contribution towards environment conservation comes with its own reward, a monetary award we get by saving on your electricity bills.

Today we have brought for you a few simple suggestions which when implemented can help you to cut down on energy consumption in your home and save electricity bill too. Have a look!

1. Window shows the way

Heat or light, it enters our home through the windows. Keeping the house well-lit and cool at the same time is challenging. Constant use of light or AC consumes high electricity. To cut on the consumption change the windows from single pane to double pane windows. Double pane windows are better insulator than single pane. It only allows half as much of heat to pass through it thus keeping your house well-lit. During winter it will keep the house warmer and in summers cooler. So it’s double bonanza. If possible hang some plants near windows or make the curtains of climber to leave some green footprint near the windows. It will keep the house cooler.

2. Dressing up the window with care

India is blessed with abundant sun and long summer days in most of its part. Instead of running AC 24X7, cover the windows with heavy curtains and keep it drawn during hot summer days. The curtains will absorb and block the heat and keep the inside cool.

3. Welcome the cool air in

Open the windows during early morning or late evenings and let the cool air sweep your home with fresh energy and flush out the stale air. Cool air outside will rush in and will help in air circulation thus bringing down the temperature of the home. When hot wind is playing havoc outside, keep the windows closed and curtains drawn to keep the heat outside.

4. Get closer to nature

Kitchen becomes unbearably hot in summers though in winters we all enjoy the same warmth of our kitchen. You can’t use fabric curtains in kitchen for obvious reason. However, you also need to cut out the heat from outside from making it warmer. Take a clue from nature and get bamboo curtains for your kitchen. It is strong, durable, environment- friendly, can withstand heat and help minimize heat intrusion in your home at the same time. It can block light without blocking the natural light completely. Try it! It is economical too.

5. From floor to wall

Winter is a time to spread the rugs and carpet to enjoy its warm comfort beneath your feet. But is summers, fold it and save it to use it again during winters. During summers enjoy the coolness of naked floor. As far as the walls are concerned, choose lighter shade for your home. It looks well-lit even with fewer lights switched on. Dark colours absorb light and heat making the house warmer and darker.

6. Selecting the right light

It’s scientifically proven that LED is environmental-friendly and consumes less electricity helping you cut down on your electricity bill too. Change the entire bulb to LED lights. If you want to create more intimate atmosphere, use yellow lights and then pair them with dimmer switches. It will create a cooler mood in your home.

7. Eco-friendly environment

Bring home natural air purifier and purify the air inside and outside of your home in a natural way. Build up a garden outside or create an indoor garden inside, and feel the freshness. Plants also reduce the amount of heat in and around the house.

8. Unplug to stay with time

Even when switched off, the plugged in devices still uses electricity. When not in use, unplug all the electrical equipments from the plug and you will save substantial amount of energy which otherwise was going in drain.

9. Keep the remote handy

We humans have become slaves of technology. Sometimes we feel too lazy to get up and switch off the TV or AC when we don’t need it and still leave it running. For all those lazy times, keep the remote handy so that at least you can switch off the device. Though it will still be consuming energy, but at least it will be lesser than before.

10. Let it be family time

Spend time together with your family. A family that stays together consumes less electricity and saves environment. Spend your evening together, watch TV together, play together… and save on your electricity bills.
