Ever been impressed by a hotel room where seemingly everything (from the choice in carpet and bedside tables to the wall colours and lighting fixtures) was designed and placed perfectly? Ever wished you could have that same ‘wow’ effect in your own bedroom?

According to experts in the industry (such as Interior Designers, Bedroom Designers, etc.), styling a bedroom to look like a 5-star hotel isn’t that hard. It’s all about focusing on the smaller details, such as…

1. Adding some artwork

Many people think that just because their bedroom is a private space that it doesn’t require small detailing, such as artwork. But even minimalist-style bedrooms can have one or two beautiful art pieces to up the room’s style and detail.

2. Committing to mood lighting

Of course you can have fun while designing your bedroom lighting, as there are no hard rules dictating which fixtures (i.e. wall sconces, chandelier) belong in which rooms of the house. And like any other room in your home, layered lighting is also recommended for your sleeping space. Thus, look further than a single overhead fixture and consider additional ones (like bedside-table lamps for reading) to add more glow and functionality.

3. Considering scale

Measure, measure, measure! Before and after you hit the shops to scope out new pieces for your bedroom. We recommend taping the width and length of your (planned/existing) furniture pieces in rectangles on the floor to help you determine which ones are too big/small, and where to place the ones that are just right in size and style.

4. Banishing clutter

Breathing room is just as important in-between your furniture pieces as it is between your garden’s plants and flowers. So, don’t waste valuable space on unnecessary items or pieces that are just too bulky for your room.

5. Being careful with loud colours

We’re not suggesting that you stick to only neutrals, but we are also not advising to choose the loudest colours (i.e. cherry red) for your bedroom’s palette.

Calm, subtle tones help to keep a space serene and timeless. And softer colours are also more skilled at reflecting incoming light. But in case you really want to add something brighter or bolder, keep it minimal (such as for the focal wall, or the scatter cushions, or even just a handful of accessories) to ensure your pops of colour don’t overthrow the entire bedroom.

6. Recognising your headboard’s potential

Don’t just opt for a headboard just because it’s there – just like anything else you add to your bedroom, your headboard also needs to complement the existing style.

And don’t think twice about altering a headboard’s design to fit in with your unique style. For instance, if yours has lifeless fabrics, maybe think about having it recovered / tufted as you would with one of your sofas.

7. Being creative with pillows

What’s the point of having a bed if you can’t even see it? For a perfect look that’s neither underdone nor overstyled, opt for four regular sleeping pillows (two on each side) and no more than three decorative ones / scatter cushions. After all, when it comes to decorative cushions, quality counts so much more than quantity.

8. Choosing inspired bedding

We spend nearly one-third of our lives between the sheets. Thus, shouldn’t those sheets be worth the investment? Never go for bedding based purely on colour/pattern. Always consider the quality of your bedding and how it can add functionality to your bedroom.

After all, first-class bedding won’t just up your bedroom’s look, but also your quality of sleep.

9. Including adequate storage

Anything that can help to keep items out of sight (such as a nightstand with drawers, an ottoman or bed with built-in storage compartments, etc.) can help keep your room’s clutter under control. Remember these days it’s not only about hiding away books or clothes, but also wires and cables (i.e. chargers for cellular phones and iPads… ) to ensure a neat and clean overall look.
