Most of the world's population are dealing with tiny living spaces, which makes this list of thirteen tiny home spaces super relevant and, hopefully also, useful.

Not sure how to kick it up in your little area? The designers of the spots in this list have got you covered with lots of tidbits for space optimisation and legroom creation.

First up is a pair of bunk beds which make things feel big by using the most versatile material of them all: quality wood.

Space for two

Simple, clean soft pines that have been sanded and buffed into a uniform block really take in both the natural and non-natural lights in this little bedroom. It is difficult to find another example of the current watchword in the design world that says: 'wood opens up, making small spaces work'.

Modern urban living

Clean, uncluttered minimalism has been an essential aesthetic development for modern urban living – and this shines here in this modern studio apartment, which combines dining and living space in a way that may make big house owners a bit envious: spotless white walls, knotty soft pine, a slender dining table, some chic central wall art and spot-lighting show how small urban spots can really live big.

A mind for design

The dividing wall thrown up in this space is a stroke of design brilliance, not just because it has created two fairly separate spaces in this single studio, but also because it has been decorated so fantastically. An unfinished wooden hexagon theme on the partition along with the lanky swanky chandelier will have any inhabitant here transfixed and content.

The writer's city loft.

One room with several prospects is what we have here. Bulky brick walls accent the clean lines of the grey walls, the modern retro furniture, the hard wood lofted bed and the shiny steel ladder. It is a true city steal, a place where one can easily imagine a tortured writer or artist plugging away.

TV island

Have you ever wished that your kitchen's island had a wide-screen HD television inside, which you could watch from your totally swanky bed? Well, look no further, cause here we have it. Cocooned within a freestanding enclave, this tiny home certainly doesn't scrimp on luxury.

The coolest dorm room, ever

This space reminded us of a university dorm room, albeit definitely the most cultivated. One room has been made into three distinctive spaces: bedroom, office and chill space. The ceiling and bed lights top it off with a real homelike elegance.

Curtain, please

The curtain has long since been known as a small space dwellers' tool-of-tools for creating a bit of privacy in a little room. Here, the curtain has been used to create space and the use of pastels, combined with a large headboard, give a sense of added grandeur.

Lengthwise

Since this is a small, lengthwise space, doing up every wall would have just overwhelmed the room, making it feel more cramped. Instead, we see a tasteful accent wall with a seriously sophisticated, urban pattern that compliments the rest of the furniture.

Light lucky

This room only actually has one, medium-sized window; hard to believe, because the designers have done such an excellent job by using wood, white and lots of ceiling light to create the impression of a room that virtually exists outside.

Space optimiser

One room and one bed contain virtually everything else you would need here: shelving which can be used for multiple purposes, all built into the basic bed frame – a feat of small-time living that really deserves emulation.

The lofted bed

A super sophisticated twist on the classic loft bed; a proper, wide staircase instead of the usual ladder has been installed. The high-sheen silver adds a positively cool atmosphere when paired with the powder blue accenting.

The loft

This loft is a proper loft – lucky! – and contains everything in one high-ceiling studio. The slightly askew angles use the space well, adding dimension to the smallness, and the loft has its own half-wall for extra privacy.

The classic hideaway Murphy bed

This last one is for the bravest of us all, those who reside in the smaller of the small spaces. Yes, you would do right investing in a murphy bed (aka: a hideaway bed), which comes out onto your entertaining couch when you are ready to snooze. Here, everything but the couch is one unit: desk, shelving and bed. Talk about small room optimisation!
