Refurbishment

Located in the midst of expansive English gardens the design for the fit out and refurbishment of this contemporary British country house has been strongly influenced by its natural surroundings.

One is invited into the property through the central hallway where the clever use of light and a feature balustrade enhances the theatrical quality of the space.

Feature elements from the handcrafted balustrade in the entrance hallway to the laser cut metal and glass panels for the kitchen doors and the feature fireplaces have all been inspired by natural elements like timber grain patterns and the leaves from the garden. The idea was to architecturally enhance each room to give distinct character and yet have a sense of continuity through the whole house.

Just as the common areas have a cohesive character, the private bedroom and the study each have a unique identity. I AM lab have designed a bespoke study based on a flexible shelving system. Its bronze finish gives a contemporary twist to a typical traditional space.

The uniqueness of the projects is strengthen by a collection of bespoke fittings which include the ‘Rhythm’ light (designed by IM Lab for the Italian glass blowing company Venini, presented at the Milan furniture fair in 2011 and now part of their catalogue ) in the dining room and a crafted stone elements in the kitchen and bathrooms + the torque desk in the study.

With both the “Rhythm” light and the study I M Lab have built on their belief that modularity and flexibility can empower the client to make changes to their environment, helping make the property not just a house, but a home.

The architectural quality of the dining room has been highlighted using rough and reflective polished plaster on different surfaces including a feature bass relief polished plaster wall that lengthens the room by creating a feature at the far end looking into the garden. The ‘Rhythm’, takes pride of place over the dining table and leads the eye down the length of the room.

The kitchen with its large stone island unit and hand finished Bulthaup kitchen units, creates a uniquely warm space at the heart of the home and the laser cut aluminium, wood and glass doors between the kitchen and dining spaces can be fully opened to create a flow through the spaces, or left closed so only the light from one space lightly penetrates the door highlighting the pattern. The kitchen with its large stone island

, creates a uniquely warm space at the heart of

the house. The laser cut aluminium, wood and glass doors leading into the dining room create a continuous flow once opened fully.

Each bedroom and bathroom has been treated individually to create unique environments with room specific bespoke design elements. This has been done through fitted joinery in the bedrooms to individually designed stone sinks in every bathroom and the stone island unit in the kitchen. The stone for the various elements were chosen and handcrafted in Italy. Stone and glass mosaic tiles have also been used in conjunction with the monolithic stone elements. Some spaces like the master bathroom and the steam room have customised mosaic tile patterns developed with Bisazza to give a subtle form of decoration.
